Reconstruction of the backup power supply system with the connection of diesel generator units for the facility of LLC "UKRELEVATORPROM."

Scope of work completed:

  • development of design and estimate documentation.
  • project approval by public authorities;
  • supply of equipment and materials;
  • manufacturing of electrical panel equipment;
  • modernization of the existing 0.4 kV distribution switchboards for diesel generators power supply connection;
  • construction work, including site preparation for diesel generator installation;
  • electrical installation and commissioning work;
  • integration of diesel generator parameters into the existing SCADA system of the enterprise;
  • approval by DTEK Odessa Power Grid Service;
  • preparation of the as-built documentation;
  • development of a detailed operation manual with descriptions of the 0.4 kV distribution switchboard operation algorithms after modernization.

Description of the main technical decisions

LLC “UKRELEVATORPROM” receives power supply from three transformer substations. For all connection points, three diesel generator power stations with capacities of 1125 kVA, 1000 kVA, and 785 kVA were identified and supplied, all housed in all-weather soundproof enclosures produced by STARKGEN (Turkey). The total capacity of emergency power sources is 2.1 MW in Prime operating mode. During the manufacture of the generators, components from leading global brands were used, such as PERKINS engines (United Kingdom), LEROY SOMER (France), and WEG (Brazil) alternators. One generator unit is installed stationary on-site, while two are mounted on mobile trailer platforms for easy relocation when necessary.

 

A number of solutions were designed and implemented to comply with the requirements of the fire and environmental supervision bodies: localization of fuel and lubricant spills, discharge of exhaust gases, and increased fire resistance of structures located next to the generator set.

Description of schematic solutions

The 0.4 kV distribution devices of the transformer substations were modernized and equipped with automatic transfer systems for switching to emergency power from the diesel generator units. Part of the electrical loads that are not critical during the operation of the technological equipment are switched off and on by controlling additional motorized drives on an existing feeder, incoming, and tie circuit breakers. For the safe operation of the 0.4 kV distribution substation, additional interlocking with locks is provided to prevent simultaneous switching of the incoming circuit breaker from the diesel generator unit and any of the grid circuit breakers from the transformers.

 

Grid and diesel generator circuit breakers are equipped with keys, to enable mechanical interlocking between devices.

 

As part of the modernization of the 0.4 kV distribution substation, the following new switchgear equipment has been installed:

  • ATS-DG: Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) panel for the control of the incoming and tie circuit breakers, and the circuit breaker for the diesel generator unit;
    • the control is based on a programmable relay from Siemens LOGO and other auxiliary equipment of European manufacture;
    • the status of the input circuit breakers, AVR readiness, and other conditions are transmitted to the higher-level SCADA system;
  • PD-DG:
    • Power distribution panels with a withdrawable circuit breaker for connecting the input from the diesel generator unit;
  • PC-DG: ;
    • Power connection panels for connecting cable lines coming from the diesel generator unit and from the SR-DG panel with the input circuit breaker, installed in the transformer substation building.

To integrate the operating parameters of diesel generator sets into the existing SCADA system, the following actions were performed:

  • optical fiber cable lines were added;
  • installed communication equipment and network analyzers;
  • The software was modernized and the main operating parameters of diesel generator sets were brought to the operator’s workplace.
